Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry - Annual Report 2018

The Inspector-General for Emergency Management (IGEM) provides independent monitoring and public reporting of the implementation of all recommendations and affirmations from the 2014 and 2015–16 Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry reports.

This report monitors progress of the 59 government actions, and 12 non-government recommendations and affirmations that remained ongoing following IGEM’s Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry: Implementation of recommendations and affirmations Annual Report 2017.

IGEM considers that significant progress has been achieved to improve emergency planning and coordination, health outcomes and mine rehabilitation in the Latrobe Valley following the Hazelwood mine fire.

Many of the key reforms across 2017–18 focused on the Latrobe Valley, including progress on:

• a wide range of community-led health initiatives
• a new air monitoring network co-designed with local citizen scientists
• the long-term Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy, which is planning for the time when the Latrobe Valley coal mines cease operations.

The report finds that the program of reform is close to completion with:

• 35 of the 246 actions set out in the Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry: Victorian Government Implementation Plan ongoing
• 10 of the 40 recommendations and affirmations directed to coal mine operators and health agencies ongoing
• many of the remaining actions, recommendations and affirmations are nearing completion or are set to transition to business-as-usual.
